Product Description

Women’s Health and Fitness Guide provides a novel approach to addressing the health and fitness needs of women. The authors developed a research-based program that describes how and why gender and stage of life are important factors to consider when designing an exercise program. Whether the professional is addressing the adolescent, pregnant, menopausal, or senior woman, this book provides answers to program design questions. The emphasis on functional fitness and the inclusion of an up-to-date review of cardiovascular, strength, and flexibility research make this text both comprehensive and timely.

Women’s Health and Fitness Guide is a practical text organized in a straightforward manner, progressing from research to practice. The authors begin by focusing on the unique anatomic, physiologic, and psychosocial characteristics of women. They explore gender-specific research regarding exercise and disease prevention and detail the specific health risks that women face, translating them into distinct approaches to preventing and managing disease. The authors then present a life-stage approach to physical activity and fitness, ranging from adolescence and pregnancy to menopause and the senior years, with a focus on the physical, mental, emotional, and social challenges women are likely to face during each transitional period. Short- and long-term goals are identified for each life stage that can be used as starting points for developing and promoting effective fitness programs.

Various exercise prescriptions for women—including aerobic exercise, strength training, and flexibility—are then presented. Though these components are common, the authors’ approach to them is not. They provide a sound rationale and advice for rethinking traditional exercise in favor of functional and integrated exercises that will help women perform the tasks and activities of daily life. The authors take readers step by step through the process of designing an individualized training program, leading to a safe, effective, and enjoyable program that meets each woman’s specific needs. Prevention of common injuries is also discussed, with special attention to anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries.

The book is concise, relevant, and filled with current data on women’s health and fitness research, laying the foundation for the research-based recommendations it provides. Enhanced with sidebars that provide readers with summaries of key findings and recommendations that are discussed in more detail in the text, the text is also complemented by numerous photos, figures, and tables to reinforce the authors’ recommendations. It also has a detailed glossary to aid readers, and it provides training tools and handouts to be used by health and fitness professionals in their work with female clients.

Women’s Health and Fitness Guide will help health and fitness professionals sort through the hearsay, testimonials, and observations they are bombarded with each day and provide clear, appropriate recommendations on fitness and activity to women in all stages of life.

Product Description
Attention All Women!

Sick and Tired of All The PMS Jokes?
Want the Real Skinny on Being Skinny?
Need the Truth About Hormone Therapy?

Learn Everything Your Mother Never Told You About Women’s Health Issues!

Every comedian out there loves to make jokes about PMS. Even our fellow sisters think it’s a great topic. Well, after awhile the jokes just aren’t funny anymore. Especially if you are stuck smack dab in the middle of a PMS blowout!

In fact, there’s a good bet that every facet of women’s health seems to be fodder for the so-called humor mongers. After all, look how long it’s taken for our medical community to finally acknowledge Fibromyalgia?

For years we were told “it’s all in your head!” Gees, if that were true, every ailment we have would result in a trip to the loony bin!

It’s only been in the last couple of decades that women’s health issue have been taken seriously. And that’s only because we finally have a generation of women doctors who understand the complexities in the female body.

Depending on your age, there are some women out there who can recall a time when you just didn’t discuss certain situations. It wasn’t considered “proper” to talk about things like menopause, infertility or (heaven forbid) genital health.

What Can You Do?

Finally, a one source guide on “Women’s Health Issues.” If it were ever important to have answers to your health questions, this is one of the most important tools you can own.

Why? Because it cuts through the “old wives tales” and brings you fresh, contemporary information on some of the most frequent health issues experienced by women.

We give you answers in “Women’s Health Issues.”

Did you know that the symptoms of endometriosis differ from one woman to another? That’s why a proper diagnosis is difficult and challenging to detect. In North America alone, there are over five million women who suffer from it. Sadly many of them are totally clueless! Learn what to watch out for in the chapter on endometriosis. You can save yourself needless suffering; the sooner you get a diagnosis, the better.

One of the ugly conditions that threaten our overall beauty is stretch marks! Once and for all find out exactly what causes them and what steps you can take to prevent or remove them. Yes, there are some treatments that can help. You can’t expect miracles but you can get results.

What about hair removal? Certainly it isn’t a true health issue unless you suffer from a condition that causes excessive hair growth. We include information on hair removal because it can be a source of poor self-image if not dealt with. Learn all about the different types of hair removal so you can decide which is best for you.

Will someone ever solve the riddle about cellulite? Ever wonder why it is that men almost never have cellulite? Get the answer to that question and discover the latest about cellulite in the chapter, “The Truth About Cellulite.”

When is the best time to start thinking about Osteoporosis? If you answer when you are 50 or more you best think again! Osteoporosis isn’t just an “elder” disease. Sure, it may not manifest totally until you are in your five plus decade, but the time to think about it is when you are much younger. Your behavior during your youth can have a direct correlation to whether you will experience the degeneration when you are older. Learn the risk factors and plan accordingly.

No guide about women’s health issues would be complete without a discussion of hormone replacement therapy or HRT. Learn the pros and cons and just how HRT affects your body.

Learn all of the above inside the digital pages of “Women’s Health Issues.” But, that’s not all. Infertility, Botox, genital health and mammograms are just a few more of the pearls of wisdom you’ll find inside.

You can view it with any web browser.

Description:
Using data gathered from 18 interviews with women who have developed arthritic illnesses we illustrate how becoming a chronically ill woman is a geographically uneven process. By examining changes in the spatial configuration of everyday life, performances of the ill female self in places, and relations with places of life important to these women, such as the health care clinic and workplace, we show how women’s capacities to struggle effectively for enabling identities are challenged. Further, we argue that embodying illness involves women and others, including doctors, assigning meanings to their changing material, lived and represented places in the world.
