Product Description
Depression – one of the top reasons Americans visit their doctors every year – is typically viewed as a one-dimensional health condition. Conventional medicine often sites a single cause (such as chemical imbalance) and recommends a single “cure” (antidepressant drugs like Prozac or Zoloft).
In Solving the Depression Puzzle, author Rita Elkins explains how depression is, in fact, multidimensional. Its causes are usually varied and interconnected, ranging from food allergies to prescription drugs to strained family relationships. Likewise, overcoming depression most often will require a multidimensional treatment. A combination of dietary regiments, natural supplements (such as St. John’s wort) physical exercise and / or meditative therapies may be in order.
This accessible and reader-friendly guide provides an investigative approach to piecing together the complex puzzle we call depression. Armed with hundreds of facts on depression your doctor will never tell you, dozens of the latest research studies, and advice from leading experts in the field, Solving the Depression Puzzle will help you beat your depression and regain a joyful, optimistic outlook.

Fibromyalgia is associated with the pain in the muscles, tendons and ligaments. The syndrome of fibromyalgia is related with arthritis. Usually it is characterized by generalized or widespread tenderness, muscular pain and fatigue. As fibromyalgia is a set of symptoms and signs which occur together, so it is considered as syndrome. It is a condition in which there is a stiffness and pain around the joints as well as in bone and muscles. Fibromyalgia is not associated with any inflammation. Usually fibromyalgia is not considered to be a type of arthritis but it is related with a form of soft-tissue rheumatism.

Yet the actual cause of fibromyalgia is unknown. But according to some people it is the pain which is caused by abnormal sensory processing in the central nervous system. The other main causes of fibromyalgia are cytokine function which is abnormal, decreased level of tryptophan and serotonin, reduced quantity of flow of blood to the thalamus region of the brain, in the spinal cord increased level of substance P (nerve sensitivity to pain is increased by this chemical) and imbalance of hormones in hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis.

Some of the major symptoms of fibromyalgia are headaches, irritable bladder, depression or anxiety, change in skin color, sensitivity to noise and temperature, pain in pelvic region, severe fatigue, memory and cognitive problem, restless leg syndrome and temporomandibular joint disorder. Though, these symptoms may vary according to the condition.

The problem of fibromyalgia may be treated naturally also. Increase the intake of high- fiber diet which includes plenty of raw and steamed vegetables. So make a habit to maximize your intake of greens. Make a habit of taking small meals at equal intervals instead of taking one large meals. Increase the intake of pure water and plentiful of liquids as they are helpful in flushing out toxins. You can also go for herbal teas and fresh juices. Restrict the intake of alcohol, caffeine and sugar as these substances increases the pain in the muscle and also enhances fatigue. Due to these problems one can have interference with normal sleep patterns. Alfalfa contains flavonoids, alkaloids, vitamins, amino acids, trace elements, minerals, coumarins, sterols and saponins. These elements help the Alfalfa to control the pain so it is used in the treatment of fibromyalgia. Omega-3 fatty acids act as an anti-inflammatory agent. So the substances like oils of fatty acid, flax seed etc are very effective in the treatment of fibromyalgia as they contain omega-3 fatty acid.

Fibromyalgia makes you feel tired and causes muscle pain and “tender points.” Tender points are places on the neck, shoulders, back, hips, arms or legs that hurt when touched. People with fibromyalgia may have other symptoms, such as trouble sleeping, morning stiffness, headaches, and problems with thinking and memory, sometimes called “fibro fog.”

Fibromyalgia Causes

Stress

Studies have shown that stress is a significant precipitating factor in the development of fibromyalgia, and that PTSD is linked with fibromyalgia. The Amital study found that 49% of PTSD patients fulfilled the criteria for FMS, compared with none of the controls. Stress can alter the function of the HPA axis and change cortisol levels in the body, leading to widespread pain .

Symptoms of Fibromyalgia

Most patients with fibromyalgia say that they ache all over. Their muscles may feel like they were pulled or overworked. Sometimes fibromyalgia symptoms include muscle twitches and burning sensations. More women than men are afflicted with fibromyalgia, and it shows up in people of all ages.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The constipation, diarrhea, abdominal pain and bloating associated with IBS are common in people with fibromyalgia.

Sleep problems

Many fibromyalgia patients have an associated sleep disorder that prevents them from getting deep, restful, restorative sleep. Medical researchers have documented specific and distinctive abnormalities in the Stage 4 deep sleep of Fibromyalgia patients. During sleep, individuals with Fibromyalgia are constantly interrupted by bursts of awake-like brain activity, limiting the amount of time they spend in deep sleep.

Fibromyalgia Treatment

The most important therapy for muscle pain is regular, low-impact exercise. Keeping muscles conditioned and healthy by exercising three times a week decreases the amount of discomfort.

Medication

Antidepressant agents known as tricyclics relieve sleep disorders, reduce muscle pain, and treat depression. The tricyclic drug most commonly prescribed for fibromyalgia is amitriptyline (Elavil®).

Improved fitness through exercise is recommended. Studies have shown that fibromyalgia symptoms can be relieved by aerobic exercise. The best way to begin a fitness program is to start with low impact exercises, like walking and swimming.

Starting slowly helps stretch and mobilize tight, sore muscles. High-impact aerobics and weight lifting could cause increased discomfort. Symptoms may be relieved by gentle stretching and light massage, as well as acupressure, acupuncture, and relaxation techniques.

Xyrem (sodium oxybate): Clinical trials of Xyrem showed that it significantly improved sleep quality and reduced pain in fibromyalgia patients. Xyrem is a central nervous system depressant and is thought to help the patient attain the deeper stage 3 and stage 4 levels of sleep. Marketed by Orphan Medical, Inc., Xyrem is FDA approved for cataplexy (sudden loss of muscle tone) in patients with narcolepsy. Note: Because of its potential for abuse, Xyrem is a Schedule III federally

Muscle Stretching

A physician may also stretch affected muscles that are causing pain. Stretching involves a technique that helps to relax tense muscles prior to an injection. The muscle is then injected with a local anesthetic such as lidocaine to provide longer-lasting pain relief. The downside is that this procedure is initially painful and injections of local anesthetics are not always effective.

Fibromyalgia is extremely difficult to diagnose. Diagnosis though becomes easier once the causes of the disease are known, but in the case of fibromyalgia, even the causes are confused. Different researchers have different theories as to what causes this condition.

Fibromyalgia can occur in children. Children are more likely to have generalized pain beyond tender points, and may have chronic problems with burning urination, ear pain without infection, abdominal pain, stomach upsets, diarrhea, itchy skin without allergies, insect bites, or infection, or hypoglycemia before fibromyalgia manifests itself.

Fibromyalgia is a complex phenomenon and medical scientists believe that there are multiple factors responsible for causing it. Studies in the field have suggested that people with the disorder perceive external stimuli at abnormally high intensities, as a consequence of neurological dysfunctions. Recently conducted experiments have revealed that some of the people with fibromyalgia show clear signs of allodynia (hyperactive brain response to otherwise normal stimuli), while others show clear signs of hyperalgesia (abnormally high sensitivity to pain stimuli).

The number one fibromyalgia symptom is chronic pain felt over the entire body. With the pain one might experience tingling of the skin, muscle aches, spasms of the muscles, weakness in the joints, and nerve pain. Sleep loss is also a fibromyalgia symptom. Some researchers believe the sleep loss is related to interrupted sleep patterns. These interruptions come from bursts of brain activity and prevent you from reaching stage four or deep sleep.

Apart from these common symptoms of fibromyalgia, people with the disorder may also experience sleep disturbances, gastrointestinal problems or urinary problems. People with fibromyalgia often suffer from insomnia or sleep apnea. Even when they get enough sleep, people affected by fibromyalgia may still have a pronounced feeling of fatigue. Many people with fibromyalgia also suffer from paresthesia, experiencing sensations of numbness and tingling in the muscles.

Yoga is a particularly effective form of exercise for those with fibromyalgia, for it provides stretches for stiffness, strength building, aerobic exercise, and tools for relaxation. In fact, the Mayo Clinic includes yoga as one of the best things people with fibromyalgia can do for themselves.

Fibromyalgia usually displays a variety of symptoms including generalized aches and pains, increased sensitivity of the skin, chronic fatigue, weakness or dizziness, muscle stiffness or joint pain and migraine headaches. Symptoms of fibromyalgia vary greatly between individuals but almost all suffer from an associated sleep disorder. Depression, anxiety, irritable bowel syndrome, numbness and tingling of the extremities and heightened sensitivity to stimuli may also be present.

Usually, this disorder is characterized by widespread pain. Also, the individual becomes very sensitive to even the lightest touch. However, the degree of the symptoms varies from person to person and from day to day. Sometimes, the pain comes in spasms and flares. Other times, it may show signs of remission. Moreover, the heightened sensitivity to touch could often prove to be very painful.

Fibromyalgia remains difficult to diagnose and treat because the cause of fibromyalgia apparition is unknown and there’s no specific laboratory test to detect it. People with fibromyalgia suffer from chronic pain in multiple parts of the body and “tender points” that hurt in response to even slight pressure.

There are cases when patients might be treated for years for chronic hip pain with no relief and after that to find that they have fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia is known as syndrome which involves medical problems, symptoms and signs tending to occur together, but not related to a single identifiable cause like to a disease. The following symptoms are present to patients with fibromyalgia like:pain and fatigue, and also may experience sleep disturbances, morning stiffness, numbness or tingling of the extremities, headaches, restless leg syndrome, painful menstrual periods, memory and cognitive problems. They can have other symptoms too.

Generally in the U.S. from two to four percent of the population suffer from this syndrome. Fibromyalgia is characterized by a chronic pain associated with multiple areas of the body, that is called ‘tender points’ distributed quite frequently in the neck, lower back, and a number of joints, situated in muscle, ligament and tendon areas. People with fibromyalgia have problems with their sleep pattern, have a lot of fatigue, and often uncertainty as to what is causing the problem.

An easily missed diagnosis is fibromyalgia because many times people will develop symptoms gradually, and often they present with a localized area of pain. Generally after an usual treatment the relief may fail. Patients with fibromyalgia have a number of systemic type complaints and problems. Many of patients with fibromyalgia are women of childbearing age, but this is also present at younger and older women, men, and children. The researchers have been trying to tie the syndrome together include problems with how the central nervous system processes pain, physical or emotional trauma, hereditary factors, underlying diseases, and others after the causes of fibromyalgia have been studied.

For diagnose fibromyalgia is difficult because there’s no single test that can be made, there are a number of things that may be going on. In the brain or below the brain level something is going on, and these changes seem to be such that the person perceives pain to a heightened level. The ‘central sensitivity’ theory is supported by some research experiments. There seems that fibromyalgia is not a psychosomatic condition, although many people think of it. They have physical problems, and also have some emotional and related issues. The major factors in this case are more and more suggestions that central sensitivity is altered sensitivity issues.

For fibromyalgia diagnosis has been established two criteria from the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) like: a patient history of widespread pain lasting more than 3 months and the presence of tender points. Usually when the pain affects all quadrants of the body it’s considered to be widespread. There are 18 sites on the body as possible locations for tender points. When a person has at least 11 tender points a fibromyalgia can be diagnosed. Because of the severity of the syndrome numerous treatment options are important. There are many people with fibromyalgia which are perfectly functional and active in life.

A substantial amount of emotional stress may be associated with fibromyalgia. Patients often feel a lot of fatigue because the altered sleep pattern does not allow adequate recovery of the muscular and ligament structures. Also the pain that is felt by patient is very bothersome and frustrating. There are a number of other associations that have been found. Rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, AIDS, or chronic fatigue syndrome are some conditions associated with fibromyalgia.

Sometimes people who have had cervical injuries, as in an automobile or other accident, can develop features of fibromyalgia over time. At these individuals the level of growth hormone secretion is reduced. Also neurochemical changes can be present, like altered levels of noradrenalin and serotonin. Fibromyalgia is an expensive condition because a lot of cost is involved in the medical care by people looking clarity, a clear diagnosis, and solutions. They also lose a lot of workdays and they make a variety of tests without finding nothing wrong.

The treatment is difficult due to complexity of fibromyalgia. Unfortunately patients with fibromyalgia end in specialty clinics such as Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, rheumatology, and quite often in pain clinics. Fibromyalgia is a well-described condition accepted in the medical world.

Fibromyalgia is a symptom wherein you feel chronic pain in certain parts of your body; it is a muscular pain especially around the joints. There can also be centralized pain felt in the spinal chord, brain, neck shoulders etc. People with fibromyalgia generally complain of pain in the joints, but it actually is the muscles and the tendons around it that cause the pain. It can be excruciating sometimes and can be a continuous throbbing pain. People suffering from Fibromyalgia also show symptoms of depression, sleeplessness, irritable bowel syndrome, stress and many others which are caused due to the pain suffered by them.

Fibromyalgia patients are very sensitive to heat, light and sometimes touch. Their skin feels tender and they may feel the painful parts to be inflamed, but in reality there would be no swelling. Poor concentration and extreme mood swings are another symptom they might display. Usually women above 30 are affected by Fibromyalgia, but even children and men are sometimes affected. There is no known cure for fibromyalgia; however you can overcome this symptom over a period of time with natural cures like herbs and dietary supplements that help with the condition.

There no known specific cause for fibromyalgia. It is found that there is a deficiency of the brain nerve chemical serotonin in patients suffering from fibromyalgia and the pain nerve cells in the brain of such people is extra sensitive, elevating the pain levels in them. Fibromyalgia is still a relatively unknown syndrome, making it a very difficult illness to treat. This can be because the symptoms are varied and not all the tests and research concludes on anything specific, leaving the origins of fibromyalgia still unknown. Another reason for this lack of knowledge is that this illness affects people of all ages and gender that find it difficult to point a finger at anything specific. One of the causes may be by the malfunctioning of the autonomic nervous system, which is responsible for a number of body functions. When this is out of gear the normal functions are interrupted causing, the symptoms found in fibromyalgia. It can also be the sleeplessness suffered by these patients causes constant discomfort.

Patients who suffer from firbromyalgia complain of restless sleep, a fact that leaves them feeling tired and with a constant feeling of fatigue due to which stress levels increase significantly. They can be devoid of the restorative sleep, which restores the injured muscles to life thereby leaving them with constant pain that they have to live with. Another possible reason could be that some of these patients are known to have been in an accident or suffered from severe muscle injury that might have triggered the onset of fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia could also be classified as a genetic illness as most of the patients are women and studies have found that patients suffering from Fibromyalgia usually have an immediate family member who also has the same symptoms. Sometimes certain infectious illness due to a particular strain of virus can have affected the central nervous system stopping the cells from producing the neurotransmitters which control the pain. These viral infections can also cause muscle problems and trauma causing the chronic pain that is felt by these patients. The reason could also be due to the increased activity of the immune system. The immune system protects our body from various viral and bacterial infections that can cause diseases. When this immune system is over active it can have a negative effect and can cause inflammation and affect the nervous system causing severe pain. This could be a likely factor contributing to the onset of fibromyalgia.

Infections, sickness or even a traumatic event are known to trigger fibromyalgia in some cases. It also could take abnormal functioning of kidneys, poor diet or hypoglycemia to bring on the onset of fibromyalgia. The one thing that is similar in all reports of fibromyalgia patients is the fact that the symptoms were triggered by a disturbing or traumatic event in their lives, causing certain neurological changes and enhancing the already present abnormality in the person.
