What is a good diet and exercise to do with fibromyalgia?

I have gained weight with fibromyalgia. It hurts to do anything… even walk for long periods. But I am sick of being fat. And no matter how healthy and little I eat, I cannot lose weight and just keep gaining. Any ideas on what I can do?

    I tried the acai berry routine, and I think it’s just a bunch of hooey. I didn’t experience any weight loss.

    I have fibromyalgia too, and my neck is killing me as I write this. But, the sad reality is that to lose weight, it takes a combination of exercise and monitoring calorie intake.

    Before you begin any cardio, try stretching. I think that stiffness is one of the worst parts of having fibromyalgia. And having massages will loosen your muscles up and make you feel better.

    It truly does feel like a vicious cycle, doesn’t it? You’re in pain, but you know you have to exercise and endure more discomfort in order to lose weight and feel better.

    I have fibromyalgia and osteoarthritis. I had to have my left knee replaced two years ago and was determined to lose weight before the surgery. Many fibromyalgia books recommend low carb diets. I found out that the “South Beach Diet” worked the best for me. because I could eat when I was hungry. I lost 60 pounds in 8 months, and have kept it off for 2 years. As far as exercise, I concentrated on stretching exercises and walking. I was so unconditioned I started with just 10 minutes then worked my way up. You can divide the walking into separate periods of time. Make sure you have good shoes before you start. Yes, I still have pain, but losing the weight has made a big difference in reducing my fatigue and increasing my stamina. You didn’t say how much you needed to lose. To help motivate you think of someone asking you to carry around a backpack that weighed that much. Could you do it? Then think of being able to lay down that backpack and how much better you will feel. Good Luck!

    No. 1, have you had your thyroid checked? Thyroid deficiency and fibro seem to go hand in hand. My thyroid fluctuates a lot so I have to have it checked at least twice a year. A simple blood test will do it.

    No.2, an endocrinologist told me that the best chance I had for losing weight was a vegetarian diet and it worked. It is not hard at all. Lots of fruits and veggies, soy milk, good carbs (whole wheat), Kashi Go Lean Cereal (high protein and high fiber) nuts, organic peanut butter, almond butter, beans. I do eat fish and some chicken and turkey. The main thing is to avoid red meat. And eat several small meals/day. And nothing fried at all. After awhile you will find you can’t even eat fatty, fried food any longer. Good luck.
