Product Description

Our elderly population is the fastest-growing segment of society, and pain, particularly chronic pain, is one of the most common problems this group faces.

In Managing Pain in the Older Adult, Dr. Jansen provides treatment options designed for older adults. Controlling pain can be challenging as the elderly, in addition to the common physiologic changes of aging, often have multiple health problems and take many medications. Furthermore, drugs are only rarely tested on older adults, so pharmaceutical intervention often relies on a slow trial and error regime. Drawing on her experience in critical care and neuroscience nursing as well as work as a GNP, Dr. Jansen adopts a multimodality approach to focus on the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of acute and chronic pain among older adults with interventional, non-interventional, pharmacotherapeutic, and nonpharmacotherapeutic methods.

Managing Pain in the Older Adult addresses a myriad of factors pertaining exclusively to pain management among the elderly, including:

The importance of early recognition of pain symptoms

Environmental factors that influence pain and its perception

Specific issues involved when treating the elderly

Non-pharmaceutical treatments: physical therapy, acupuncture, and other complementary techniques

Lack of resources for treating pain in the aged

The book will serve as an invaluable reference for a wide range of health care providers working with our aging population.

Product Description
Because of the individual and varying symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome, medical guidelines encompassing the needs of every patient simply do not exist. Through proven research and recommendations for future treatment, Disability and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: Clinical, Legal, and Patient Perspectives discusses the difficult subject of how to diagnose disability in chronic fatigue syndrome patients, how to determine the severity of a patient’s disability, and how new disability guidelines would make more chronic fatigue patients eligible to apply for disability benefits. From this information, you will gain a clearer understanding of chronic fatigue syndrome, enabling you to more accurately assess a patient’s condition or decide if your client is eligible for disability benefits.

Essential for clinicians, lawyers, patients, and medical insurers, Disability and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome provides an outline of disability guidelines established by the Social Security Administration (SSA), the Veterans’Administration, and the American Medical Association, as well as federal guidelines. While gaining information on the different types of disability insurance available to chronic fatigue patients, such as the Long Term Disability (LTD) policy, you will also learn how standard procedures such as psychiatric evaluation, neuropsychological testing, and physical capacity measurement can both help and hinder the process of determining disability in a patient. In addition, Disability and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome provides insight into:

the symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome, such as inability to work and level of stamina, in accordance with medical and legal definitions

disability guidelines set by the SSA

how patients’varying symptoms and conflicting findings affect disability diagnosis in chronic fatigue syndrome patients by SSA standards

plans by the Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome (CFIDS) Association of America to work with the SSA concerning strategies to dissolve barriers to Social Security Disability Income Benefits for patients and to advocate for up-to-date information on CFIDS in the SSA’s Listing of Impairments.

tips on applying for SSA benefits

claims that insurance companies have used misleading surveillance videos and fraud to discontinue disability benefits to patients in need of coverage

Since the Social Security Administration does not currently consider a CFIDS diagnosis enough to win a disability claim, Disability and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome also contains many recommendations for improving federal disability guidelines, such as using results from functional evaluations, neuropsychological testing, and exercise endurance testing as evidence of impairment. For less severe cases, this book provides you with suggestions for rehabilitation of CFS patients before disability claims are made, including patient training and education, dependency counseling, muscular conditioning, and occupational therapy. Whether you are a patient, clinician, lawyer, or medical insurer, Disability and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome will guide you through the complex issues surrounding disability and this intricate disease.

Product Description

Lyme disease is one of the least understood of the new diseases—and one of the most dreaded. Because undiagnosed or untreated Lyme disease can pose serious health threats, people who develop symptoms such as joint pain and tiredness worry that they may have chronic Lyme disease. Even people with confirmed acute Lyme disease worry that the treatment they’re getting won’t cure the disease and that it may reappear later in a more debilitating form. These fears are made worse by the well-publicized uncertainties surrounding diagnosis and treatment of the disease.

In this book, noted Lyme disease researcher and clinician Alan Barbour presents a comprehensive and even-handed discussion of what we know about the disease and offers medical science’s current thinking about its more controversial aspects. Throughout the book, Dr. Barbour uses the stories of four “patients” to illustrate the varying course of the disease in different individuals and under different circumstances. A fifth “patient” stands as the model for people who, in the absence of a clear diagnosis, remain convinced that Lyme disease explains their symptoms—and as a result suffer for too long without appropriate treatment for what’s really ailing them.

Including illustrations of ticks and the rashes caused by their bites, as well as maps showing the worldwide distribution of Lyme disease and the relative risk of the disease across the United States, the book offers a wealth of useful information for patients, family members and caregivers, and those who live, work, and play in high-risk areas:

Explains how Lyme disease is spread, and who is at risk Describes the symptoms and consequences of Lyme disease, from the rash following a tick bite to the most serious complications, such as infection of the nervous system, joints, and heart Describes all the diagnostic tests for Lyme disease and explains what the test results mean Compares Lyme disease with other conditions, such as fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome, and explains why they are often mistaken for Lyme disease Presents a compassionate and convincing discussion of depression, which is often the correct diagnosis for a patient who clings to a diagnosis of Lyme disease despite repeated negative diagnostic tests Carefully explains proven and unproven treatments, and summarizes the debates about antibiotic and other treatments Outlines what individuals can do to avoid getting Lyme disease as well as what the community can do to reduce the number of Lyme-carrying ticks

Here at last is an intelligent and interesting guide for patients, as well as an insider’s tour of medical science. The author includes an explanation of how the Borrelia burgdorferi bacterium was discovered in the laboratory and how it was first connected with the disease, a fascinating account of modern medical detective work.

Product Description
“Living with chronic pain for over 40 years has taught me valuable lessons. Realizing that millions of Americans share this unkind challenge, I wanted to share practical ideas I found to be quite helpful. The basis of my chronic pain is fibromyalgia and temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD). My body has generalized pain as well as localized pain along with fatigue. Pain is a constant companion. There are times the pain is worse and I call these flare-ups. For me TMD occurred due to a displaced disc in the right jaw. One doctor’s theory is that my body had to accommodate the missing disc and fibromyalgia developed. My journey with pain and fatigue began when I was a college student and has progressed through marriage, motherhood, full-time college instructor, and now a retiree. Through the years some doctors told me that my condition is all in my head. I felt the guilt of not being a better daughter, wife, mom, teacher and friend. I work hard to turn frustration into living well with chronic pain.

While I live with the pain of fibromyalgia, I believe many of the ideas shared in this book are helpful in coping with pain caused by other conditions. My purpose is to present strategies I have used to cope with pain in the hope that you will have one of those ‘ah-ha’ moments of thinking, “that might work for me too!”

Knowing the very act of reading may be painful, I purposely wrote each topic to stand alone in a concise format. A challenge is given at the end of each topical piece to invite you to consider similar ways of taking control of your pain. Please do not be overwhelmed and discouraged if an idea does not work. Use what works for you and use your imagination to think of other things you can do. Remember, I have been at this for over 40 years. For me, nothing happened overnight. I am constantly refining ways to help me cope with pain.

What I have learned about myself and my pain is the basis for this book. My wish is that you too will find helpful ways to improve your life in spite of the pain.

You deserve to live well, even with chronic pain
“
